The staff at Big Muddy Heritage Consulting have the skills and tools needed to create models of archaeological potential. We have been doing this for years, first using topographic maps and air photos, and now using more complex Geographic Information Systems (GIS) processes. These models are used by proponents to appropriately plan their projects, potential HRIA needs, or to avoid sensitive heritage sites or areas.
Staff at Big Muddy Heritage Consulting are experienced in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to collect and manage small and large collections of archaeological data and other relevant vegetation, hydrological, and topographic information. We use GIS to record and map site locations in the field and communicate those to clients and regulators, to create and manage databases of site location and significance, and to produce models of archaeological potential for clients. We use GIS to make our detailed maps of sites relative to proposed developments in HRIA reports, and maps of artifact distributions for excavation reports. In addition, most jurisdictions require that HRIA data in the form of shapefiles of shovel test locations and transects of survey coverage be provided to support reporting. The increasing importance of GIS in the field of archaeology and heritage resources management make these important skills to have readily available.
