Dr. Dan Meyer, Ph.D., RPA17246

Dan has over 30 years of experience in heritage resources management. He has directed and participated in numerous Historical Resource Studies as a Project Archaeologist throughout the Boreal Forest and Eastern Slopes of western and northern Canada as well as throughout the southern Plains since 2001.  He has experience across North America including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Chiapas (Mexico), New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota, Vermont, and Yellowstone National Park. Dan has expertise in directing regional surveys and large-scale excavations of complex, multi-component sites. Dan has conducted extensive surveys for forestry and mining clients, and has supervised over 100 field assessment projects that have recorded over one thousand five hundred archaeological sites in the last twenty-three years.  Dan has produced predictive models of archaeological site locations for many proponents, and has authored Heritage Resources Protection Plans for others.  Dan has written numerous other desktop overview studies on behalf of his clients.  Many of the projects with which he has been involved have had Indigenous consultation or traditional use components.  All of this work has included reporting on all of these aspects of historical resources and consultation in Environmental Impact Assessment reports and other regulatory processes. Dan served several terms as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Archaeology at the University of Calgary where he taught many undergraduate and graduate courses. Dr. Meyer was the Editor of the Alberta Archaeological Review from 2010-2019, and has served numerous terms as the President, President-Elect, and Board Member of the Association of Consulting Archaeologists. Dan has a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and a Ph.D. in Archaeology.  Although his dissertation concentrated on an archaeological topic, the associated education included all other aspects of anthropology including socio-cultural studies, linguistics, and physical anthropology.  One of the key topics of his Ph.D. comprehensive exams was settlement patterns, the basic study of how humans utilize the landscape and the built environment. Destiny is a Senior Archaeologist, with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Archaeology, and a Prairie Horticulture Certificate from the University of Saskatchewan. Over her 8-year career she has worked on projects including oil and gas, forestry, and mineral exploration throughout Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, and Ontario. Over the last three years, Destiny has worked primarily in northeastern Alberta, doing archaeological survey within boreal forests, as well as archaeological survey in British Columbia’s interior plateau region. Additional fieldwork includes assisting in site mitigation of historic cairns, and small-scale excavation of a tent ring in the Northwest Territories. Destiny has previously worked on HRIA projects in Manitoba on Enbridge’s Line 5 Replacement. Her skills include, but are not limited to, identification and investigation of high potential landforms, excavation of complex archaeological sites, mapping and documentation of cultural materials found in situ, and drawing stratigraphic profiles of shovel tests and excavated units. She has worked in laboratory settings and participated in report production including auditing of field data, photograph catalogs, completion of site forms, and site mapping. Destiny has strong historical family ties to the Red River Métis community.
